A man is dead tonight after being shot by a state trooper during a crash investigation in Caldwell County.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol sources, Trooper William Miller was responding to a wreck around 4:21 Saturday afternoon on Grace Chapel Road in Granite Falls. He was alerted by first responders that one of the people involved, 48-year-old Scott Patrick Seagle of Hickory was armed with a handgun.
After Trooper Miller’s arrival, investigators say Seagle continued to display the weapon and ignored trooper Miller’s commands to disarm. Miller fired, striking Seagle who was taken to an area hospital, where he later died as a result of his wounds. Trooper Miller was not injured.
Trooper Miller has been placed on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the shooting.
