Felony Traffic Stop Leads to Multiple Drug Charges

Morganton, NC — Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety made a felony arrest following a traffic stop near downtown Morganton.

James Nelson Fields of Sundown Road, Morganton was taken into custody following a traffic stop in which he failed to yield for blue lights and siren near the Plaza Service Center on W Fleming Drive in Morganton. Public Safety Officer Z. Carlton attempted to stop a vehicle operated by Fields for speeding. Fields failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. During his attempt to evade officers, Fields was observed discarding suspected illegal narcotics from the vehicle.

Officers maintained visual contact with the suspect, and Public Safety Officer E. Jerez-Diaz located and recovered the discarded narcotics. Officer S.J. Huffman and her K-9 Partner Jaros responded to assist with the investigation.

James Fields was taken into custody and charged with Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver Cocaine, Felony Possession of Cocaine, Maintaining a Dwelling for Controlled Substances, Driving While License Revoked, Speeding, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Siren, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Simple Possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance. Fields was already on probation at the time of his arrest.

No injuries were reported.
