Duke Energy is warning customers of active, fraudulent text messages and phone calls claiming to be from the company about scheduled “rolling power outages” or immediate overdue payments.  These scams often urge immediate, high-pressure action, directing users to click suspicious links or pay via prepaid cards/apps, which Duke Energy never does.
Key Warning Signs & Actions:
  • Fake Texts/Links: Do not click on links regarding outages (e.g., “Scheduled Rolling Power Outages”), as these are scams.
  • Imposter Callers: Scammers may claim to be employees demanding instant payment to avoid shutoff.
  • Verification: Always verify by calling Duke Energy directly using the number on your bill, not the number provided in a suspicious message.
  • Report It: Use the Duke Energy online Scam Reporting Tool to report suspicious activity.
If you feel in danger or have been scammed, contact local law enforcement.
