HICKORY – February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the achievements of African Americans and honor their central role in U.S. history.
To commemorate this important month, the City of Hickory is hosting a variety of programs and events for all ages to enjoy, paying tribute to African American heritage, culture, and contributions. Join us in celebrating and learning together!
Keep Black History Alive: Passing History One Conversation at a Time
Thursday, Feb. 5 | 6-7 p.m. | Ridgeview Branch Library
Join a round table, facilitated by Grover Linebarger, to share stories of national and local Black history to honor Black voices and stories.
6th Annual Living Wax Museum
Saturday, Feb. 21 | 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. | Ridgeview Recreation Center
This family-friendly event celebrates Black History Month by bringing historical figures to life. Visitors will hear inspiring stories and learn new perspectives about the Freedom Riders, Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman, Elizabeth Bernice Barker Johnson, and other famous African Americans throughout history. Damarius Johnson: Picturing Black History

Meet author and editor Damarius Johnson as he presents stories and images from the recent NAACP Image Award-nominated book, “Picturing Black History: Photographs and Stories That Changed the World.” There will be a Q & A session and book signing after the presentation. Copies of the book will be available for sale. “Picturing Black History” uncovers untold stories and rarely seen images of the Black experience, providing new context around culturally significant moments.
Zines & Things: Black History

Explore your creativity and celebrate Black history by creating a zine. Try different techniques such as stamp carving, collaging, writing, and drawing to make your mark.
African Drumming Workshop
Saturday, Feb. 28 | 2-3 p.m. | Patrick Beaver Memorial Library
Celebrate Black history and join us for an exciting, hands-on introduction to the vibrant rhythms of African drumming. Led by Rick Cline, program director of Hickory Music Factory, this interactive class will explore traditional techniques, cultural history, and the joy of making music together. No experience is necessary; just bring your enthusiasm! Drums will be provided. Registration required.
