Suspect in Newton officer involved shooting apprehended after hospital release

18 year old Ahmon Jymir Ali Henderson, the suspect in the officer involved shooting on Monday, was arrested on Tuesday (February 3rd) at the Sandalwood Court Apartments in Newton, the same location where the original incident occurred.

Henderson faces multiple burglary charges in Catawba County, as well as multiple charges related to burglary and violent crimes in Mecklenburg County.

He was booked into the Catawba County Detention Facility under no bond.

City of Newton Police Department has identified the subject involved in the February 2, 2026, officer-involved shooting as 18-year-old Ahmon Jymir Ali Henderson of Salisbury, North Carolina.
Henderson was struck in the leg during the incident and was initially transported to a local hospital before being transferred to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He has since been released from the hospital; the Newton Police Department was not notified prior to his release. It is not clear where the breakdown occurred with regard to the communication of his release.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, multiple warrants have been obtained for Henderson’s arrest on the following charges:
– Two counts of second-degree burglary (felony)
– Possession of a stolen firearm (felony)
– Resist public officer (misdemeanor)
Henderson also has several outstanding warrants from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department issued February 1, 2026, including:
– Breaking or entering to terrorize or injure (felony)
– Larceny (felony)
– Assault by strangulation (felony)
– Domestic violence (misdemeanor)
– Assault on a female (misdemeanor)
– Assault by pointing a gun (misdemeanor)
– Communicating threats (misdemeanor)
Henderson is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information on his whereabouts, or who encounters him, is urged to call 911 immediately. Members of the public are advised not to approach him.

Newton Police Department officers responded to a trespassing call at the Sandalwood Apartments on February 2, 2026, resulting in an officer discharging their firearm and striking a male subject in the leg.
At approximately 11:52 a.m., officers received a 911 call reporting a possible trespassing incident at 705 Sandalwood Court. The caller reported knowing the subject and stated he was in possession of a gun.
Officers searched the apartment but did not locate the subject. They were then advised he had fled and was hiding in a shed behind the apartments. While checking the area, a male exited one of the sheds and ran toward officers. During the encounter, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the subject in the leg.
The subject was detained immediately. He was transported by EMS to a local hospital and later transferred to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem.
No officers or other citizens were injured, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy. The incident remains under active investigation by the Newton Police Department, with a separate investigation being conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Agencies assisting include the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, Catawba County Emergency Medical Services, and Newton Fire Department.
