Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety responded to UNC Health Blue Ridge Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 2026, following a reported domestic violence incident.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with an adult female victim and her infant child, both of whom were receiving medical treatment. The victim reported being assaulted by her boyfriend, identified as Shane Curfman, at their residence off Causby Road in Morganton. The infant also sustained injuries during the incident.
Officers observed visible injuries consistent with the victim’s account. The Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Department of Social Services were notified and responded to assist.
Following further investigation, officers located Mr. Curfman at the residence and took him into custody. He was transported to the Magistrate’s Office and served with warrants.
Mr. Curfman was charged with:
- Felony Assault by Strangulation
- Misdemeanor Assault on a Child Under 12
- Misdemeanor Assault on a Female
- Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence
Curfman was placed in the Burke County Jail under a 48 hour hold for domestic violence at which point his release will be set by a judge.
During the investigation, officers also discovered a marijuana growing operation inside the residence. Additional charges related to this discovery remain under investigation.
