Lenoir- On Wednesday, February 11th, at approximately 02:14 a.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision on US 64 near Helton Hartley Place, in Caldwell County.
A 2008 Volvo SUV was traveling West on US 64, crossed the centerline and then collided with the guardrail. The Volvo then overturned and collided with a tree before becoming engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Volvo, David Dula, 76, of Morganton succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision
The initial investigation does not indicate speed or impairment to be contributing factors in the collision. While Troopers conducted the investigation, US 64 was shut down for one hour.
