On February 20th, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 3:14 p.m. at 1025 Oak Ridge Ch Rd., Hays.
Upon arrival, deputies found Daniel Mark Byrd, 52 years of age, in a vehicle inside the garage with an apparent gunshot wound. Daniel Mark Byrd was pronounced dead at the scene.
Byrd had served as Wilkes County School Superintendent since 2016 and spent more than 26 years in education, all within the Wilkes County School system.
At this time, there is no evidence of foul play. However, the investigation is continuing by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
