BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Universal Furniture has officially opened a new 200,000-square-foot upholstery facility in Burke County, North Carolina, marking a “significant investment in the future of domestic production and innovation.”

According to the company, the new plant expands its made-to-order upholstery capabilities, supports production across living, dining, outdoor, and more, retains 100% of its existing workforce while creating new jobs in the region, and improves efficiency and reduces overhead through a purpose-built, modern facility.

“What started in 2016 with just five imported sofas has grown into a robust offering of more than 250 frames and 1,000 plus customization options, designed with both retailers and designers in mind,” the company posted on its LinkedIn page. “Beyond production, this facility reflects a deeper commitment, both to our people and our community. With features like an on-site healthcare suite and room for future expansion, we’re building not just furniture, but a stronger foundation for long-term growth.”

Universal Furniture’s new plant replaces its former facility in Conover. By relocating to the updated space, the company achieved $1 million in overhead savings while retaining its entire existing workforce, according to a release from the company.

The new plant will support the production of stationary living room frames, sleeper sofas, beds, dining furniture, outdoor pieces, and reclining furniture made in the United States.

Universal Furniture said it expects to hire 20 to 30 additional employees at the Burke County plant over the next two years, and the 50 acres of land surrounding the facility provide space for further expansion in the future.
