Construction began Monday, March 30, on a multi‑phase project to upgrade key streetscapes in downtown Hickory. Improvements will take place along Government Avenue SW from First Street SW to Third Street SW, as well as on First Avenue NW between North Center Street and Second Street NW.
Funded in part by an $850,000 state grant through North Carolina’s Rural Downtown Economic Development program, the project will enhance walkability, safety, and the overall pedestrian experience in the growing downtown district.
Planned improvements include:
- Wider sidewalks and safer, more visible crosswalks
- Enhanced outdoor areas and community gathering spaces
- Curb bulb‑outs to improve pedestrian safety and slow traffic
- Infrastructure for upgraded lighting to match existing downtown streetscape features
These enhancements are essential to supporting continued business growth, improving pedestrian safety, and strengthening the downtown environment for residents and visitors.
Construction Phasing and Traffic Impacts
The first phase of work will focus on Government Avenue SW. During this time, traffic will be impacted with lane closures or full road closures, and on‑street parking in the construction zone will be temporarily unavailable.
Request for Public Patience
The City of Hickory asks for the public’s patience throughout the construction period. While temporary delays and inconveniences are expected, these improvements will result in a safer, more attractive, and more accessible downtown. Residents and visitors are encouraged to allow extra travel time, observe all posted construction signage, and use caution when traveling near work zones so crews can return home safely each night.
The full project is expected to be completed by August.
