Explosion at residence leads to criminal investigation

On Wednesday, 04/01/2026 multiple Catawba County fire departments along with Emergency Medical Services responded to a report of an explosion at a residence in the 4000 block of Shook Rd. When responders arrived they found the home fully consumed by fire. Two of the home’s occupants were injured, one severely.

Catawba County’s Fire Marshal requested the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office to initiate a criminal investigation. Sheriff’s investigators have since obtained information concerning the possibility of explosive materials inside this residence. Sheriff’s investigators have requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to assist in this investigation. SBI agents are on site with Sheriff’s investigators and the Catawba County Fire Marshal’s Office at this time.
