Burke teenager dies from apparent accidental shooting

An 18-year-old Burke County man has died as a result of what appears to be an accidental shooting.

Burke County sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene at a residence on Mount Olive Church Road in the early hours of Tuesday after responding to reports of a shooting involving multiple victims.

Deputies located two gunshot victims, the first identified as 47-year-old Timothy Floyd Whisenant of Morganton who sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The second victim was identified as 18 year old Dawson Timothy Whisenant, also of Morganton who sustained a gunshot wound to the chest, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Dave Faherty with WSOC reported that eyewitnesses said the gun went off after the victim’s brother placed it in a box striking the father’s leg before hitting the teenager.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available. At this time, no charges have been filed
