Hickory’s University City Commission hosts Great College Teachers Workshop

HICKORY – The City of Hickory’s University City Commission hosted the Hickory Great College Teachers Workshop on Tuesday, May 12, at the App State Hickory campus.

This event brought together expert faculty from Lenoir-Rhyne University, Appalachian State University in Hickory, and Catawba Valley Community College to focus on what it means to be an effective college teacher today.

Each participant was nominated by their institution in recognition of their excellence in the classroom. The workshop created space for these accomplished educators to share their expertise with one another.

As part of the National Great Teachers Movement, the event emphasized that great teaching is an ongoing craft that benefits from reflection, collaboration, and the exchange of real-world practices. Through open discussion and peer-to-peer learning, participants refined their approaches, explored new ideas, and strengthened a community of skilled educators committed to student success in Hickory.

Two participants said:

“Hickory higher education is thriving! Our teachers bring impressive experience, a dedication to innovation, and a genuine passion for education. Being in the same room with these educators confirmed something I already knew to be true. In the wake of COVID, changing attitudes toward higher education, and the explosion of AI, our teachers remain optimistic and resilient. They are at the top of their game. What an exciting time to be a Hickory college student and educator!” – Ariel Hamilton

“Attending the Great College Teachers Workshop in Hickory was a genuinely energizing experience. Being in the same room with seasoned educators from Appalachian State University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, and Catawba Valley Community College, sharing candid conversations about pedagogy, the thoughtful use of AI in the classroom, and our collective responsibility to students, reminded me exactly why I chose academia.

What struck me most was the depth of wisdom in that room and how freely it was shared. These are professionals who show up not for recognition, but out of an unconditional commitment to student success and community betterment. Hearing perspectives that so closely mirrored my own, from colleagues I deeply respect, was both validating and humbling.

I left feeling proud of the path I have chosen and inspired to keep growing. I am truly grateful to have been part of this community.” – Soumyakant Padhee
