PRESS RELEASE: NC State Highway Patrol / 12/09/2024
On Sunday, December 8, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Burke County on US 64 at Fisher Davis Road. A 2005 Chrysler 300 traveling south on Fisher Davis Road, attempted to turn left from a stop sign onto US 64 and turned in front of a westbound 1975 Ford dump truck.
The driver of the Chrysler, Danny Lee Scott, 64, of Morganton, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His wife, who was a passenger was transported by EMS to UNC Health Blue Ridge, in Morganton, with serious injuries.
The driver of the dump truck, Robert Claude Smith, 59, of Morganton, was transported by EMS to UNC Health Blue Ridge, in Morganton, with minor injuries.
The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors and no charges will be filed in this case. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
