Domestic Disturbance Leads to Charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon

On Sunday, January 5, 2025, at approximately 10:27pm, Officers with the Morganton Department of Public Safety were dispatched to 198 Curtis St in reference to a motor vehicle collision with injuries.

Upon officer’s arrival, two vehicles were located still running with no occupants approximately 40 feet to the right of the roadway, with one vehicle being pushed into the woods.  Several neighbors who heard the collision reported seeing two subjects running up the street and away from the collision.

Officers were able to locate one of the drivers, identified as Yoselin Elena Lopez Velasquez, 19, of Morganton, walking on Curtis St.  Lopez Velasquez advised officers she collided her vehicle into the second vehicle intentionally.  She identified the second driver as her boyfriend and where he may be located. Officers were able to identify his location and after interviewing him, began to investigate a domestic violence incident.

Lopez Velasquez was screened for driving while impaired and upon further investigation, she was arrested and charged with the following charges:

  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill – Felony
  • Driving While Impaired
  • Driving After Consuming
  • Consuming Alcohol by 19/20 Year Old
  • Crime of Domestic Violence

Lopez Velasquez was taken before the magistrate and charged, receiving no bond and a first appearance in court on Monday, January 6, 2024 at 9:00am.
