I-40 in the Pigeon River Gorge partially reopened Saturday after months of being closed in the wake of Hurricane Helene. According to the NCDOT two lane sections, or one lane in each direction of the interstate, is now open between Exit 20 and Exit 15, between Exit 7 and the state line, and approximately 5 miles into Tennessee. These sections will have a speed limit of 35 miles per hour. There will also be one lane on the eastbound side designated for emergency vehicles.
In addition to standard vehicles these stretches will also be open for standard-sized trucks, but oversized loads will not be allowed and will be required to continue to take alternative routes.
This marks a significant step toward reconnecting North Carolina with Tennessee, and it comes as a relief to travelers and businesses alike. Drivers are urged to to stay alert and drive safely as much of this area remains an active work zone.
NCDOT estimates that it could take up to three years before these damaged sections of I-40 are fully repaired.
