Several Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute students recently competed in the statewide SkillsUSA North Carolina Championships competitions. The SkillsUSA North Carolina Championships, held in Greensboro, NC in April. The annual SkillsUSA state conference is the largest showcase of Career and Technical Education in the state with over 3,000 students competing in more than 140 skilled, technical and leadership development competitive events. These contests span more than 95 trade areas from construction, automotive, and welding to drafting, public safety, culinary, cosmetology and more.
The following CCC&TI students earned honors in their respective competitions:
· Ebbon Cook, Silver, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) 5 -Axis Milling
· Douglass Kolb, Bronze, CNC 5 – Axis Milling
· Zachery Seagle, Bronze, CNC 2 – Axis Turning
· Nathan Smith, 4th Place, CNC 2 – Axis Turning
· Atlas Pritchard, South Caldwell High School/CCC&TI Career and College Promise Student, Gold, CNC 3 -Axis Turning
CCC&TI was also recognized during the awards banquet for doubling its number of participating students in the SkillsUSA program since last year. The college was honored with a plaque for the increased participation and student engagement.
During the competition, the participating CCC&TI students and other students from across the state worked against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in their chosen occupations. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations and technical experts and test competencies that are set by industry. In addition, leadership contestants demonstrated their skills, which included extemporaneous speaking and conducting meetings with parliamentary procedure. Over 100 industry partners, such as the North Carolina Department of Transportation, 84 Lumber, NCMCA, Carolina Ford Dealers, Sundt Construction, Brady Services, Starr Electric, Edwards Inc, ARC3 Gases, Builders Mutual, and many more, help support the competitive events.
Top student winners received gold, silver and bronze medallions. Many also received prizes such as tools and/or scholarships to further their careers and education. The SkillsUSA North Carolina Championships are for middle school, high school and college-level students who are members of SkillsUSA. First place winners earn the right to compete in the
National SkillsUSA Championships in Atlanta, GA alongside more than 7,500 other competitors from across the country in over 100 contests.
