Tesla Quartet returns for encore performance at LR’s Concert Series

February 22, 2019 @ 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

HICKORY, N.C. – In the continuation of Lenoir-Rhyne University’s 2018-19 Concert Series, Tesla Quartet will perform Friday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Grace Chapel. As last year’s audience favorite, the quartet returns with a program of string quartet Meditations, featuring Joseph Haydn’s “Seven Last Words of Christ” and Osvaldo Golijov’s “Tenebrae.”

The Tesla Quartet features Ross Snyder (violin), Michelle Lie (violin), Edwin Kaplan (viola), and Serafim Smigelskiy (cello). According to the “International Review of Music,” the group brings a refinement and prowess to both new and established repertoire, and they are often praised for finding the inner heart of everything they play, regardless of style, era, or technical demand.

The Quartet has recently won Second Prize, the Haydn Prize, and the Canadian Commission Prize at the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition. In 2008, at The Julliard School the group established itself as one of the most promising young ensembles in New York after winning second place in the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition. The group is dedicated to community involvement and outreach.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. For more information, visit lr.edu/publicevents or call the LR Box Office, which is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 828.328.7206. Visit teslaquartet.com to learn more about the group.

The 2018-19 Concert Series will conclude with its final performance at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 13, at Grace Chapel. Michael Burritt, marimba soloist, will perform in coordination with the LR percussion studio and as part of the North Carolina Day of Percussion. Burritt is one of the world’s leading percussion soloists and has three solo recordings.

Established in the fall of 2000, the Concert Series at Lenoir-Rhyne University serves the University community and the Greater Hickory area by providing opportunities to hear and interact with superb musical artists. The Concert Series brings musical artists to the University to present concerts and recitals, work with students in the master class setting, lecture to music classes, and provide examples of professional artistry in music.
