The city of Morganton has been ordered to pay nearly $620,000 to a church. Superior Court Judge Daniel Kuehnert made the order for First Freewill Baptist Church in the February first court filing. A bench trial was held in December. At issue was damages to the church caused by a faulty storm drainpipe, which ran under the building. First noticed in 2015, a lawsuit was filed in 2019 concerning the property at 502 and 504 South Sterling St. The payment is $619,639 with an 8% per year interest rate. The case can be appealed.
