RALEIGH – An armed kidnapping suspect allegedly fired rounds before a North Carolina State Highway Patrol sergeant returned fire, striking the suspect, according to a release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
According to the release, the early morning (6:45 a.m.) officer-involved shooting followed several reported hit-and-runs that occurred between McDowell and Burke Counties yesterday (Sept. 20) and a reported armed kidnapping on eastbound I-40, near mile marker 114, in which the alleged female kidnapper was said to be in the bed of the truck, that was traveling east on I-40.
The report indicated that when the NC State Highway Patrol sergeant encountered the female suspect in the truck bed, she allegedly fired shots. The sergeant returned fire, hitting the suspect. Emergency medical attention was given to the suspect, who is in stable condition. The 19-year-veteran state highway patrol sergeant did not sustain injuries and has been placed on administrative duty.
Traffic was stymied for several hours following the shooting. Kicks 103.3 callers reported traffic being backed up to exit 113.
Law enforcement is working to identify the suspect and charges are pending. The SBI is investigating the officer involved shooting and the NCSHP is investigating the suspects actions.
