DWI Crash sends 2 children and Pregnant woman to hospital

On Thursday evening, April 4, 2024, Morganton Department of Public Safety officers with D-Platoon and firefighters with C-Shift were dispatched to 624 W Fleming Dr in reference to a motor vehicle collision involving 3 vehicles with a vehicle rollover and 3 occupants entrapped.
Firefighters arrived within seconds of receiving the call and stabilized the vehicle.  All 3 occupants of the Toyota 4Runner were extricated within 2 minutes.  Two children and a pregnant passenger in a second vehicle were transported by Burke County EMS with minor injuries.
Several eye-witnesses stated the Toyota 4Runner, driven by Mathis McCann, was traveling eastbound on W Fleming Dr, crossed over 2 lanes into oncoming traffic and collided with 2 vehicles head on, then flipped on its side and came to rest against the westbound guardrail.
Mathis Pardue McCann, 34, of Morganton was charged with the following and given a custody release at the Magistrate’s Office:

  • DWI
  • 2 Counts of Misdemeanor Child Abuse
  • Failure to Maintain Lane

Both west bound lanes and 1 east bound lane of W Fleming Dr were closed for approximately 1 hour during the investigation.

All three people inside the Toyota 4Runner were extricated within two minutes.
