VOLUNTARY EVACUATION AREAS IN BURKE COUNTY

IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Burke County Emergency Management

In the interest of public safety and the protection of our citizens, visitors, and first responders,
Burke County Emergency Management has determined that it is necessary to issue a voluntary
evacuation of the following flood-prone areas in Burke County. These evacuations are suggested
due to the recent and projected rainfall estimates for Burke County.
Meteorologists are forecasting record-setting creek, stream, river, and lake levels with this weather
event. Intermittent thunderstorms, heavy rain, wind, high wind gusts, culvert washouts, impassable
roads, downed power lines, power outages, and downed trees are highly possible throughout Burke
County.
VOLUNTARY EVACUATION AREAS IN BURKE COUNTY
 SPECIAL ATTENTION TO – LINVILLE RIVER, LAKE JAMES, JOHN’S RIVER, CATAWBA RIVER,
LAKE RHODHISS, & HENRY FORK RIVER FLOOD-PRONE AREAS.
 SPECIAL ATTENTION TO – CAMPGROUNDS, RV PARKS, & RECREATIONAL SITES NEAR
FLOOD-PRONE AREAS.
 FLOOD-PRONE AREAS NEAR ALL STREAMS, CREEKS, PONDS, RIVERS AND LAKES.
 AREAS WITH HISTORY OF FLOODING, REGARDLESS OF SEVERITY OR LOCATION.
SHELTERING
Burke County Emergency Management recommends that residents who are evacuating attempt to
relocate with a friend or family member who resides in an area that is not subject to flooding.
Residents should only take essential items for personal health when evacuating.
