North Carolina State Highway Patrol report that at approximately 9:30 pm, 76 year old Carolyn Calhoun Cooper of Morganton, who was driving a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling east in the westbound lanes of the interstate, when she collided with a 2022 Ford Mustang being operated by Landon Keith Norris, 23, of Newton.
Cooper succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Norris was critically injured and transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte.
The initial investigation does not indicate speed or impairment to be contributing factors in the collision. No charges will be filed in this case.
