On January 11, 2026, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of shots fired on Sundown Road in Morganton. Upon arrival, deputies learned the suspect had already fled the scene. After interviewing witnesses, deputies identified 43 year old Lyndon Dale McCorkle, Jr. of 3157 Jamestown Road, Morganton as the suspect.
McCorkle was later located by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and NC Highway Patrol and taken into custody. McCorkle was turned over to the Morganton Department of Public Safety and transported to the hospital. After being released from the hospital, he was taken to the Burke County Magistrate’s Office, where he was charged by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office with Felony First-Degree Burglary, Felony Discharging a Weapon into Occupied Property, Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill, and Misdemeanor Assault by Pointing a Gun.
McCorkle received no bond, and his first court appearance was scheduled for January 12, 2026.
