On April 17, 2026, deputies with the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop on a black Ford Mustang on U.S. Highway 64 east after observing erratic driving.
During the stop, deputies determined that the driver’s license was suspended. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of several improvised explosive devices.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad responded to the scene to assist. The devices were safely secured without incident.
Following the removal of the explosive devices, deputies conducted an additional search of the vehicle and located methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, and a firearm.
As a result of the investigation, Christopher Scott Thompson, a 58-year-old white male from Stony Point, was arrested and charged with:
· Ten counts of Possession of a Weapon of Mass Destruction
· One count of Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
· One count of Possession of Methamphetamine
· One count of Possession of Marijuana
· One count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Thompson is currently being held in the Alexander County Detention Center under a $690,000 secured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for April 20, 2026, in Alexander County District Court.
The investigation is ongoing. Additional charges may be pending.
