City of Lenoir installs wayfinding signs around Lenoir

The City has installed 52 of 53 wayfinding signs across town. Once the new Hospital Avenue sidewalk is complete, contractors will install the last sign. The signs are located on major corridors and on City streets, including Downtown Lenoir.

The destinations and locations were restricted to cultural, historic, art, sport attractions or other destinations like visitor centers. Privately owned businesses are not allowed on wayfinding signs per state NCDOT standards and federal MUTCD standards.

To celebrate the project, City Planning Department staff created a scavenger hunt. Click the following link to download the scavenger hunt form, Wayfinding Whereabouts Scavenger Hunt (PDF). The hunt will be open until 5:00 pm on Monday, June 8, 2026. Don’t write and and drive! Everyone who completes the hunt will be entered into a drawing for some prizes. The prizes are:

  • 1st Place: $25 Parks & Recreation certificate
  • 2nd Place: Two forms of City swag
  • 3rd Place: One City swag

The wayfinding signs cost $629,500. The project was funded by an American Rescue Plan Act grant, Appalachian Regional Commission grant, and the Lenoir Tourism Development Authority.
