According to the initial wreck report from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the officer who struck a vehicle while pursuing a motorcycle was traveling at speeds of 95 to 100 miles per hour at the time of the collision. Hickory Police Officer Atia Shamseldin was pursuing Chanceler Johnson on Sept. 8 when the officer collided with a minivan t the intersection of U.S. 70 and 13th Street SW. The minivan driver, 38-year-old Cynthia Nicole Lail of Hickory died at the scene and her son, 12-year-old Michael Lail, died on Sept. 10 at the hospital. According to the statement from the North Carolina Highway Patrol, another report will be released by the Patrol Collision Reconstruction Unit and is expected to take months to complete. No charges have been filed at this time. The HPD officer was placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina Highway Patrol investigates the crash.
