A Morganton man has died after a shootout with police. The incident occurred in Caldwell County Sunday on Hwy 321 near Sawmills. 35 year old Jerome Lavon Connelly was pronounced dead at Frye Regional Medical Center. He had weapons including a rifle and pistol that he waved around at the scene where he had wrecked according to calls to the Caldwell Communications Center. A Caldwell deputy and a NC Highway Patrol officer responded to the area. Gunfire was exchanged, EMS transported Connelly to the hospital. The deputy was placed on administrative leave. The SBI and District Attorney’s office is now investigating.
