Caldwell Co Sheriff’s Office: Scam of the Week

Its only Monday and the scammers are already at it. Sheriff Kevin Bean wants to alert Caldwell County citizens, especially senior citizens about a scam that continues to target older adults. We call it the “Grandparent Scam.” We have received reports of older citizens getting phone calls from someone on behalf of their grandchild, or claiming to actually be their grandchild. The caller says the grandchild has been arrested and urgently needs money to get out of jail. Sometimes another person gets on the phone pretending to be an attorney or law enforcement officer, demanding bond money be sent immediately through cash apps, gift cards, wire transfers, or even cash pickups.
⭐️⭐️Here’s what you need to know⭐️⭐️
Law enforcement will NEVER call and demand money over the phone.
Bond payments are NEVER handled through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or cash apps.
Scammers claim its an emergency and ask victims not to tell anyone.
⭐️⭐️ Here’s what to do ⭐️⭐️
Hang up IMMEDIATELY.
Call your grandchild or another trusted family member directly using a number you already have.
NEVER send money or give out personal information to unknown callers.
Report the scam to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office 828-758-2324.
Sheriff Kevin Bean reminds everyone, ” Scammers prey on fear and emotion, especially when it comes to our loved ones. Take a moment, slow down, and verify before you act.”
